竹筊 / Bamboo Device Used in Divination

筊,由籐的根部做成,呈新月形,正面有刻紋,兩個合為一對,凸面為陽、平面為陰,用於廟中問卜。問卜時將茭擲出,一陽一陰(一平一凸)表示神明認可,為聖茭;兩陽面(兩平面)表示神明還未決定要不要認同;兩陰面(兩凸面)則表示神明不認可問卜之事。

Pitt Rivers Museum label - d.d. H.N. Giles B. Consul TAMSUY, FORMOSA (v. his letter) Sept. 1889. CHINA. Two halves of a rattan root used at temples before the altar for fortune telling. Worshipper throws them in air. Round + flat = male + female (+ & -) principles upon equilibrium of which [illegible word], safety of phys. universe depends. Both rounds falling up = fairly good. Both flat = v. bad. flat + round = v. good. [El.B 28/01/2008]
